In Taiwan, Moon blocks, 筊杯 jiǎo bēi are two crescent-shaped wooden or bamboo blocks used in temples to seek guidance or answers from deities. Each block has a flat and a curved side.

Here’s how it works:

1. Pose a Question: People start by praying and asking a clear yes-or-no question.
2. Drop the Blocks: Then, they gently toss the blocks and see how they land.
3. Interpret the Answer:
   • One flat side and one curved side (a "smile" and a "frown") means "yes."
   • Both flat sides up means "no."
   • Both curved sides up means the gods are laughing and the question is unclear, so they should ask again.

This practice is a way for people to connect with the divine, find reassurance, or seek guidance on important decisions. It’s a beautiful part of Taiwanese temple culture, blending faith with community and tradition.
